KATAKA is focused on the work on the segmented spindle which is a completely new mechanical technology. It combines the best properties of the chain with the best properties of the spindle.
This means that there are almost endless opportunities for making new products based on the technology. However, it also implies that the boundary conditions are not explored in great depths for some areas.
The performance depends on a multitude of parameters, e.g. the choice of materials, the load levels, the amount of cycles required, the temperature etc.
We have calculated dynamic load levels from 200g up to 6tons for actuators based on the segmented spindle technology.
The segmented spindle
The segmented spindle consists of uniformly shaped elements, which can be coiled together. In the world of mechanical engineering, this is a completely new way of solving an old problem. Some call it a 3D zipper, others call it an Indian Rope trick.
When not coiled up the segments are linked together in a flexible chain which can be stored in an almost arbitrary shaped container.
There are not any textbooks available on the statics, kinematics and dynamics of this type of technology yet. We had to do our own testing and calculation models to get things right. We even had to come up with our own name for the technology.
When a lot of segments are joined together, it resembles a conventional spindle, however it does not need to have any threads at all or all the threads can be placed vertically. Consequently, we chose to call the technology for a segmented spindle.
The segmented spindle technology is protected by several patents (granted and pending). It is a radical new and different way of combining compactness with the advantages of the well-known and well-proven conventional spindle and the equally well-know chain.
